The Brockton City Council on Jan. 27 confirmed a slate of promotions in the Brockton Fire Department, advancing six career firefighters into supervisory roles.
The council accepted the mayor's and fire chief's communications recommending promotions and voted to confirm the appointments by roll call. The promoted personnel and new ranks announced on the record were: Brendan R. Weeks, promoted to deputy fire chief and assigned to the fire prevention bureau; Jonathan A. Roderick, promoted to fire captain; Jonathan P. Roddenbush, promoted to fire captain; Alexander E. So, promoted to fire lieutenant; Eric B. Westerlund, promoted to fire lieutenant; and Joseph M. Coleman, promoted to fire lieutenant.
The chief (speaking on the record) described Weeks as a 23-year veteran who will replace Deputy Chief Williams in the fire prevention bureau. The chief also noted the service histories of the promoted members, including military service where applicable and roles on technical-rescue teams.
The clerk conducted a roll-call confirmation; the clerk recorded the votes in favor and announced "10 in the affirmative." A subsequent motion for reconsideration failed. The council accepted the related communications and placed them on file.
Why this matters: the confirmed promotions adjust leadership and supervisory staffing in the fire department and assign oversight for fire prevention and several engine and ladder companies.
The council recessed briefly after the confirmations before proceeding with other business.
