Council refers request to show voucher amounts on tax bills to staff after public testimony

Laura McCoy, president of the Green Bay School Board, told the council the district will lose approximately $12,776,000 to vouchers this year and asked that the city place an additional line on tax bills to show that figure. Representatives of the League of Women Voters and other residents testified in favor of increased transparency; they framed the request as informational rather than a policy attack on private education.
Alder Proffitt moved to refer the idea to staff for study; Alder Galvin seconded. Council members said staff should estimate the technical cost of adding a line to the tax bill, identify legal constraints, and return with recommendations. The motion to refer was approved; the matter will be considered by staff and returned to the council for a future decision.
Ending: The referral does not change current tax bills. Staff will report back with cost estimates, legal analysis and implementation options before any council decision to add the line to property-tax statements.
