Carpinteria declares February 2025 "211 Community Celebration Month"; Communify highlights helpline use locally

The Carpinteria City Council accepted a proclamation Monday declaring February 2025 as 211 Community Celebration Month and heard a presentation from Pat Keelan, CEO of Communify, the nonprofit that operates 211 Santa Barbara County.
Pat Keelan told the council that 211 is a free information and referral service available 24/7 and offered in more than 150 languages. Keelan said 211 connects residents with resources ranging from food and rental assistance to mental health and disaster services, and thanked the city for its partnership.
Keelan said that in 2024, 100 Carpinteria residents used 211 and that the majority of local callers were women between the ages of 30 and 54 with incomes below $26,000. He listed the top local needs as housing, transportation and community services including utility and rental assistance.
The council read the proclamation into the record, noting national and state 211 coverage statistics cited in the proclamation: the Federal Communications Commission adopted the 211 dialing code in 2000 and 211 now covers most U.S. households; California access was cited at 96 percent in the proclamation.
Councilmember motioned to receive the proclamation and the motion passed by voice vote. Council members and Communify staff posed for a commemorative photo at the meeting.
Communify invited the public to its 211 Community Day celebration on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara; Keelan said the event will feature more than 60 nonprofit organizations and provide free services including haircuts, health screenings and food distribution.
