Superintendent previews agenda: $1.2M for advanced manufacturing curriculum, Orange Park to pilot program

Superintendent Mark Brodsky used the workshop's final segment to preview the board's upcoming business agenda and several district initiatives. He said the district received a legislative appropriation of about $1.2 million to develop an advanced manufacturing program and is proposing a contract to purchase curriculum and equipment to start the program at Orange Park High School and Oakleaf High School.
Brods ky said staff looked to established programs — including a program in Pasco County — and that the appropriation is intended to buy high‑end curriculum and equipment. District staff said Orange Park was a logical pilot site because it already hosts engineering and robotics programs and has certified staff who can be trained; Oakleaf and other schools were invited to observe and may be included in future expansion.
Brods ky noted the program will require space, equipment and staff certification; the district has discussed partnerships with local colleges and employers. He said additional funding and facilities work would be needed to expand to other sites.
Other items Brodsky previewed on the agenda included career-and-technical-education month proclamations, a public hearing on ESE services materials, instructional-materials adoptions (K–5 ELA, K–4 math and personal finance), summer ESY calendars, budget amendments, construction project completions and contract prequalification. He flagged a proportionate-share mitigation request from BMHB Ventures for approximately $1.5 million for additional school seats as an item of possible interest.
Brods ky also explained calendar questions raised by board members: several half-day elementary schedules are scheduled mid-week to reduce attendance-related absences that historically occur when professional-development days or parent conferences are placed on Mondays or Fridays; the district's calendar committee develops those dates.
Brods ky closed by reminding the board that the final workshop materials and redlines for policy will be distributed and that a safety-and-security meeting was scheduled directly after the workshop.
No formal action on the advanced-manufacturing contract was taken during the workshop; Brodsky said the contract would be brought forward on the business agenda for board consideration.
