Turlock accepts $80,000 state traffic-safety grant to expand DUI, speed and bicycle enforcement

The Turlock Police Department announced and the City Council accepted an $80,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to fund expanded selective traffic enforcement for 2025.
Lieutenant Hall said the award will fund 23 DUI saturation patrols, two DUI checkpoints, and 25 other enforcement details focused on pedestrian and bicycle enforcement, distracted driving and other hazardous behaviors. Staff estimated the grant-funded enforcement will add roughly 288 officer working hours dedicated to traffic safety.
The grant can be used for checkpoint supplies, radar equipment and DUI‑trailer updates, Lt. Hall said. The department described a three‑pronged approach: engineering, education and enforcement. The grant expands enforcement capacity but does not change the traffic unit’s overall mission, he said.
The council approved acceptance of the grant by unanimous vote. Several public speakers supported using technology and directed enforcement to reduce speeding and red‑light running in high‑collision corridors.
