Community group pitches storage pavilion near Springsteen Park; council to seek alternate sites

A civic organization asked the Lampasas City Council on Jan. 13 for permission to lease a parcel adjacent to Springsteen Park and convert an unused pavilion into a storage building and lit workspace for community events.

Why it matters: Event organizers said they run a series of activities from August through February and currently store supplies in multiple places across town. The group asked to enlarge the existing pad, install a 30‑by‑30 metal storage building and connect to utilities; the organization offered to pay utilities while the city would maintain the surrounding grounds.

City staff said they had no immediate objections to partnering with the group but noted the council should consider alternate locations because the park footprint may be needed for future park expansion or parking. Staff also reported the pavilion has not seen regular city use for at least five years and that a utility pole and water are already on site, which reduces infrastructure cost if the council approves a lease.

Group representatives said the pavilion’s existing foundation and fencing make it a promising low‑cost option and that lighting is a priority so volunteers can load and unload after evening events. One presenter said the structure is currently about 21.9 by 21.9 feet and they would like to expand it to 30 by 30 feet to accommodate stored equipment and lighting.

Council members and staff discussed parking needs and the city’s broader parks inventory. City staff said there was no action item on the agenda that night and committed to searching for alternate locations within and outside the park system before bringing a lease proposal back to council. Several council members and staff said they supported continued dialogue with the group while staff evaluates alternatives.
