South Fayette board receives multi-site construction update; intermediate school bid opening moved to Feb. 18

South Fayette Township School District trustees heard a detailed update on January 28 from Draught Collective and district consultants on the status of several capital projects, including the intermediate school addition, a planned K‑2 building, a relocated bus depot and the middle‑school pool project.
The presentation outlined schedule changes and next steps. Draught Collective reported the intermediate school additions project is out for contractor bidding and the district has moved the advertised bid opening to Feb. 18 to avoid competing bid deadlines. “There is another project, at another school district that is bidding near the same date…contractors are asking for more time so they could bid our job,” the Draught Collective presenter said. The board was told bids would be received on Feb. 18 and considered at the board meeting the following week on Feb. 25.
Why it matters: the schedule change is meant to preserve contractor interest and competitive pricing. The presenter said roughly 15 contracting firms attended the pre‑bid meeting, indicating strong interest in the intermediate school work.
District and consultant discussion then turned to the K‑2 site plan and building layout. The presenter described a multi‑level K‑2 building with kindergarten and cafeteria on the lowest level, bus access on the lower floor to minimize stairs for the youngest students, a public entrance at the middle floor with gym and large‑group instruction, and academic wings above and below. The cafeteria location and some rooms are being refined after a recent program review, and engineers were asked to revise the geotechnical proposal now that the site configuration has changed.
On the bus depot site, consultants reported a preliminary grading solution and said they had asked civil engineers for a geotechnical proposal and HRG for a traffic‑study proposal. “This site…we're gonna be required to have a traffic study,” the presenter said, noting sight‑line and roadway alignment challenges on Old Oakdale Road and that preliminary traffic work would be available later in the week for review.
The presenter also reported the middle‑school pool project is underway with biweekly contractor meetings and “no outstanding issues at this point.”
Board chair Mr. Gray (board member) asked for clarification about bidder interest and schedule; the Draught Collective presenter said moving the bid date should retain interested contractors who otherwise would be conflicted by a near‑identical bid date elsewhere.
Next steps: the board will receive revised geotechnical proposals and traffic analyses before the next workshop and is scheduled to review intermediate school bids at the Feb. 25 meeting. Consultants said additional site‑access options for the bus depot will be evaluated as traffic engineering and geotechnical results arrive.
No formal action was recorded on these project updates during the Jan. 28 meeting.
