City public works staff reported and described repairs after a water main failure near the entrance to the College Grove neighborhood on Sunday.
What happened: Staff described a 6‑inch PVC water line that ruptured, producing a washout that exposed utilities and the roadway near Lake Elbert. Because the line is part of a looped system, it received high flow and pressure from two directions, which worsened the washout.
Response and repairs: City crews, public safety and contractors coordinated to shut down affected mains, bypass a damaged 2‑inch line with a temporary flexible connection, repair stormwater pipes and restore the roadway. The city said the contractor working on the nearby Lake Gilbert Drive project provided materials and equipment to assist. The road was reopened and passable by the end of the day.
Public safety and access: Staff noted that the washout occurred at the only entrance to College Grove, which required coordination with public safety so emergency access remained available; a medical event in the neighborhood during the incident was handled with access maintained.
Follow-up: Staff said some affected infrastructure was already slated for replacement as part of the Lake Elbert project and that cleanup and follow-up work would continue the next day.
