Parents question district decision to pause elementary clubs including Green Club; administration cites reallocation and will brief board

A parent and co-curricular advocate told the Washington Township School Board on Jan. 9 that the district paused several elementary extracurricular clubs this school year, including the Green Club and an elementary Newspaper Club. The speaker cited a history of student involvement and local awards associated with the Green Club and asked the district to reinstate the programs.
The parent said the clubs had wait lists and produced measurable projects at Bells Elementary and other schools (recycling initiatives, zoo contest recognition and in‑school water-filling stations). She said the clubs were not cut from the budget earlier in the year, and only in December was she informed they would be paused while the administration reviewed whether the funds might be used more productively.
Board members asked for clarification about the contractual status of clubs. The solicitor and administration explained that while contract documents may list club titles, a listed club does not automatically require the district to run it each year; the district retains discretion in program implementation, subject to collective-bargaining obligations and any agreements with the bargaining unit.
Administration said the decision to pause the clubs was made collaboratively and that district leaders had discussed the change with labor representatives. The board agreed to request more detail and asked that the administration present the rationale and alternatives at an upcoming work session so the board can review the decision and consider reinstatement or other options.
Board members encouraged the administration to include the School Advisory Committee or site leaders in the follow-up conversation. One board member suggested discussing the matter in work session and possibly in executive session if personnel or contract details require confidentiality.
No formal vote was taken; the administration agreed to brief the board with additional information.
