Trustees approve minutes, expenditures and treasurer’s report; strategic plan draft to be shared in December

At its meeting the Saint Mary's County Library Board of Trustees approved routine governance items, received financial and audit updates, and discussed the draft strategic plan.

Treasurer Sandy Hallenstein presented account balances and Vanguard investment details, reporting the PNC checking balance remained approximately $710 and providing Vanguard account values and dividend figures as printed in the packet. Hallenstein noted dividend payments and yields for the Vanguard accounts and that most accounting and auditing fees were already paid for the year.

Director Michael Blackwell told trustees the external audit was not yet complete; the auditing firm had asked additional questions but had not raised concerns and the audit should be presented at the December meeting. Blackwell also said he will distribute a draft of the library’s strategic plan to trustees ahead of December; the board requested an in-person or facilitator briefing from the consultant before final adoption.

Blackwell noted statutory housekeeping: compiled laws of Maryland relating to public libraries were distributed to trustees and a recent change moves certain employee appeals from the State Board of Education to the State Library Board. He also reminded the board that the state minimum wage increase effective Jan. 1 will need to be built into next year’s budget and that the library will present budget options in December.

Trustees scheduled a tour of the new Leonardtown Library construction site and were invited to the library’s annual employee day.
