The Saint Mary's County Library Board of Trustees approved two staff-sought operational changes: an addendum to driving permission forms and the placement of locked sharps containers in branch public restrooms.
Director Michael Blackwell explained the driving form addendum. The change requires employees who will drive on library business or operate the library van to notify supervisors if they are taking prescribed medication that carries a driving-impairment warning; employees need not disclose the medication name, only that it could affect driving coordination. Staff told the board the language aligns with county practice and that all employees who may drive on library business must sign the forms annually in January.
The board also voted to install locked metal sharps containers in public restrooms at the three branches after a child found a diabetic needle at the Lexington Park Library. Blackwell told trustees the containers would be secured, placed out of reach of children, and emptied on a scheduled basis by trained personnel coordinated with the county health department. Trustees discussed whether staff would publicize the change and whether the health department would handle disposal; staff said they did not plan broad publicity and expected health‑department coordination for emptying and disposal.
Both measures were moved, seconded and approved by the trustees present.
