City staff told the Tuscaloosa City Council on Oct. 12 that the council’s upcoming agenda includes a tentative $3,370,859 award for the Garner Road Grama Sewer Rehabilitation Project, two new liquor-license applications and several smaller contracts and budget amendments.
Mr. Holmes, a city staff member, told the council the item on page 17–18 of the agenda would be a tentative award to SAC Construction LLC for the Garner Road project, "This is a total of $3,370,859," he said. He also cited two joint funding agreements with the U.S. Geological Survey Water Resources Division — $13,575 for stream gauging on Cripps Mill Creek and $22,600 for work at Lake Tuscaloosa — and a minor public-works contract of $2,850 with American Fence Company for gate repairs on 22nd Street.
Why it matters: the sewer rehabilitation contract represents the largest dollar amount previewed and, if authorized, will direct city public-works work and local contracting dollars. The USGS agreements cover hydrologic monitoring that informs flood and water-supply planning. The smaller contracts and budget amendments are routine but affect departments’ near-term work plans.
Other items staff listed included a contract with Southern Health Partners (summary details not specified in the pre-meeting remarks), a reimbursable agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation for utility relocation tied to the Skyland Boulevard resurfacing and safety widening project, two fiscal-year-2025 budget amendments (amendment No. 7 to the general fund reserve for future improvements and amendment No. 3 to the FY2025 general fund budget) and appointments to the Fire Prevention Code Board of Adjustments and Appeals.
Mr. Mills, a city staff member, announced two alcohol-license applications: a Dollar General store at 13086 Hope Peterson Road in Cottondale applying for table wine (off premises) and retail beer (off premises), and Tuscaloosa LLC, operating as Asia Buffet at 1320 McFallen Boulevard East, Suite 7 10, applying for a restaurant retail liquor license under new ownership. The applications were presented for council consideration; the pre-meeting remarks did not record final votes or permit decisions.
The council was also advised that two members of the Sister City Commission, Donna McKee and Chad Jackson, had submitted resignations before the end of their terms; Shelley Dorril, described in the pre-meeting remarks as the new executive director, has provided recommendations for replacements. Staff said the city can accept resumes for an extended period or post the openings for two weeks.
A small disbursement was listed for District 3 improvement funds: $2,000 for the "Night to Shine" event at the Church of Tuscaloosa. Staff also noted forthcoming appointments and routine items discussed previously in committee. The pre-meeting concluded with a motion and second to enter an executive session; the city attorney certified that the executive session discussion met the legal standard for discussing offers or negotiations related to the purchase, sale, exchange or lease or the market value of real property.
No final votes on the agenda items above were recorded in the excerpt of the pre-meeting remarks. The council’s formal actions on these items are scheduled for the full council meeting later on the same day.
