Lincoln County Sheriff's Office submits grant application for portable radios; no county expenditure requested

Lincoln County’s sheriff’s office informed the board on Jan. 27 that it applied for a grant through the Mid Nebraska Community Foundation to replace portable radios that a repair vendor declared unserviceable.
Captain Dan (Sheriff’s Office) told commissioners a set of six portables bought in 2016 have become unrepairable and the sheriff’s office quickly submitted an application that could fund portable radios in amounts ranging from $500 to $50,000. He said the department has a radio‑repair line item in its budget and was not requesting county funds at the time of the meeting.
The sheriff’s office noted that the same model radios cost about $5,400 per unit in 2016 and are now “just over $10,000” per unit, making replacement expensive. Commissioners offered to provide a letter of support if needed and noted two pending pieces of state legislation that could provide additional funding for radios and communications equipment.
No vote was required; the application had already been submitted. Commissioners asked to be kept informed of the grant result.
