County GIS team readies site upgrade, parcel maintenance and new assessment tools

Colin Russell of Bruce Harris Associates told the committee Jan. 27 that the county’s GIS program continues parcel maintenance work and is preparing to launch an updated public GIS website built on newer technology. Russell said the current public viewer runs on older software that will be retired in coming years and that the new site is near internal testing and will be turned over to assessment staff for user testing.
Russell said a new “analyze assessed values” map application has been released to township assessors; the tool lets assessors query properties and visualize sales and assessment data. He said training and ongoing improvements are planned and the assessor’s office has given positive feedback.
Russell also described projects with the highway department (a geodatabase of drainage structures) and noted GIS staff participation in recent emergency-management exercises. He flagged that lower numbers of recorded documents are constraining GIS funding; that concern was referenced in the recorder’s fee discussion, when committee members considered increasing the per-document GIS fee to sustain the program.
The committee voted to accept the monthly GIS report and Russell answered technical and staffing questions. Russell said Noah, the county’s newer GIS maintenance staffer, is working well and that Bruce Harris Associates continues to provide training and technical support.
