Parks advisory board backs ‘My Legacy’ web memorial program, will ask council to approve

The Sebastian Parks and Recreation Advisory Board voted to send City Council a recommendation to adopt My Legacy, a web-based memorial program that would let residents purchase and place memorial benches, bricks and plaques and attach extended family stories via QR codes.
Board members and staff said the platform replaces a largely manual process and adds an option for families to publish a short “community story” behind a bench or brick that is accessible by scanning a QR code. The board’s motion to recommend implementation passed during the meeting.
Staff showed the board a working preview of the platform, which staff said will list available locations, show whether a site is available and allow buyers to enter an inscription and pay online. The presenter demonstrated that a bench purchase would produce a QR-code plaque at the chosen site; scanning the code brings up an extended biography or “story” rather than only the name and dates usually found on a memorial plaque.
Staff told the board the platform is GIS-enabled so family members can find a memorial from anywhere and view the attached story on a computer or phone. The board discussed whether preexisting bricks and benches could be retrofitted with QR-code plaques; staff said there would be an additional cost to retrofit existing plaques and bricks.
Board members asked about pricing. Staff said the current ground-brick memorial cost is $50 and that, if the council approves the new program, the proposed price for a similar memorial entry would be $125 to cover administrative costs. Staff also said orders would still be processed by the city: once a purchaser places an online order the bench would be shipped to the city and city crews would install it.
The board discussed outreach to community groups such as the Garden Club of Sebastian and said staff would present the program to City Council on Feb. 12; if council approves, staff said the site could go live Feb. 13.
Motion and vote: A board member moved that the advisory board send a recommendation to City Council to implement the My Legacy program; a second was recorded from Miss White and the motion passed. The meeting record does not include a roll-call tally by name.
