Mayor John Franklin announced that Trader Joe’s opened Dec. 6 at North County Square and said the store brought about 75 new jobs to Vista.
At the State of the City event, Franklin said the city worked with North County Square over a 17‑year project timeline to secure the store and praised the center’s “can do” approach. Bill Valeka, managing director of North County Square, told the mayor onstage that the center partnered with the city to meet a tight timeline.
Franklin also listed other recent job expansions in Vista: M2 Ingredients’ expansion added more than 100 jobs in the mushroom‑powder industry, Allsco Incorporated created more than 100 new jobs, and Granite Construction added about 65 positions. He highlighted retail and dining openings as part of a broader downtown revival, and quoted Rachel Bell, CEO of the Vista Chamber of Commerce, on the benefits of new retail options for residents.
Why it matters: The mayor presented the openings as local economic development wins that preserve retail options, create jobs and support downtown events and visitor traffic.
Clarifying details: Franklin said Trader Joe’s opened on Dec. 6 and brought about 75 new jobs. He named specific employers and approximate job counts: M2 Ingredients (100+ jobs), Allsco Incorporated (100+ jobs), Granite Construction (65 jobs). He credited the retail center and chamber partnership for the openings but did not announce city subsidy amounts or tax incentives in the speech.
What’s next: Franklin said more openings are expected in early 2025 at North County Square; no council actions or incentive approvals were announced during the remarks.
