School committee approves change to Winchester High School GPA values; implementation to be retroactive for recent classes

The Winchester School Committee voted unanimously Jan. 23 to adopt recommendations from the WHS GPA working group that alter the numeric values assigned to letter grades on the college-prep and honors scales. The motion, moved and seconded during the committee’s regular meeting after the budget public hearing, instructs the administration to set a college-prep A equal to 4.0 and adjust A+, A and A- values on both the CP and honors scales as shown in the working group's report.
Implementation: the committee approved implementation in the summer of 2025 and ordered retroactive recalculation of GPA values for the classes of 2026 and 2027 and for cohorts thereafter. The committee and school leadership said the change followed a multi-stakeholder process that included students, parents, teachers and WHS leadership and that the working group’s report and recommendations were the result of that review.
Why this matters: supporters said the change aligns Winchester’s CP A value with common practice in peer districts and will remove an inconsistency that parents and students identified in college-application and scholarship contexts. School leaders said the process included input from students and staff and that the change will be implemented without an immediate budgetary cost to the district.
