County signs support letter for RTC BEAD broadband application; no local funding requested

Davies County commissioners approved a letter of support Jan. 28 for RTC Communications' planned application to the federal Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) program.
Nate Willis, chief financial officer at RTC Communications, told the board the BEAD competition awards up to 100 points and five of those points relate to local government endorsement. Willis said the company's proposed deployment would cover roughly 93—6 percent of Davies County with fiber-to-the-premises if the application is successful.
Willis asked only for a formal endorsement; he said RTC was not requesting county funds and that any local incentives would be limited to existing tools such as infrastructure development zone tax exemptions. Commissioners supported the letter, saying federal funds targeted at the remaining hard-to-reach addresses in the county would advance the county's broadband goals.
The board voted to approve the letter of support. Commissioners said staff should keep commissioners informed of the application timeline and any required follow-up commitments.
