Court staff, jailers and sheriff praised after volatile prosecution in Dunn County

Katie, the Dunn County Clerk of Courts, described the prosecution of Darren Osborne and told the committee the defendant was particularly difficult to manage in court. "He was never had such an out of control, defendant in court. He had to be actually, you know, shackled and then bolted to the floor," Katie said.
Katie said Osborne was assigned several attorneys over time and later represented himself; she said he had a history of assaults on jail staff. "He was appointed a number of different attorneys and had a very quick temper and, you know, was really a history of coming at jailers as well," she said. The clerk said Judge Peterson "handled both of those cases" with patience and that the defendant is now in prison.
Committee members heard that the sheriff's office and jail staff provided security for court proceedings and covered shifts during memorial services for Officer Jeff Reynolds. The sheriff was not present at the meeting because he was ill, the chair said.
No formal action was taken; the clerk commended court security, jail staff and other agencies for their work on the case.
