Caroline County sheriff’s office receives state accreditation; assessors praise professionalism

Assessors from the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission presented a certificate of accreditation to the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office during the Board of Supervisors meeting, praising the agency’s policies, procedures and professionalism.
Todd Klingepill, program manager for the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission, told the board that a team of assessors reviewed administration, operations, training, personnel, property and evidence, and finance across more than 192 standards and more than 570 discrete items. “They said the sheriff’s office is operating at a high level of integrity, professionalism, and accountability,” Klingepill said.
Sheriff Robert Mosier accepted the certificate and credited department staff for the achievement, naming several employees for their work on the accreditation process. “They are so committed to that, and it’s so important to everyone to be as professional as you can be,” Mosier said, and added that operating under best practices can reduce civil liability for the county.
Why it matters: Accreditation is voluntary and indicates that an agency meets a defined set of standards for law enforcement operations; Klingepill noted that only 112 of more than 400 eligible Virginia agencies currently hold accreditation.
Next steps and context: The sheriff’s office was first accredited on Aug. 19, 2008, and the assessors’ report said the office has maintained accreditation since then. The board paused for photos and congratulated the sheriff and staff.
