Board votes to continue voter-integrity letters; supervisors to receive draft before Feb. 11

The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors voted to continue consideration of letters addressing election procedures and voter identification to its Feb. 11 meeting so supervisors can review the draft text before any formal approval.
Vice Chair Sunny Dhaliwal asked that the board see the letters before voting; board members agreed to continue the item to the Feb. 11 meeting with the intention that staff will circulate draft letters and that the board could consider their approval at the continuation. The motion to continue passed 5-0.
Supervisor Steve Ding, who chairs one of the board’s election advisory efforts, said the intent of the letters is to address two issues that have complicated local tallying and increased costs: same-day registrations and the use of ballots mailed or processed outside the prior registration timeline. Ding said the board is not “standing alone” on the subject and referenced state bills that would require voter identification. He told colleagues, “We will have the letters for you next week,” and said the letters would reflect the committee’s recommendations.
Public commenters and members of the Elections Advisory Committee urged the board to proceed, emphasizing concerns about processing provisional and same-day registrations and the cost and public confidence implications.
The item will return for review and possible approval on Feb. 11, when the board expects to have the text of the letters in the packet for discussion.
