Sugar Land council accepts $5,438 in donations for city animal shelter

The Sugar Land City Council unanimously accepted $5,438.12 in monetary donations to support the city’s animal-shelter care, adoption and community animal-welfare education efforts.

City Assistant Manager Rob Valenzuela introduced Sergeant Ray Rodriguez of the Sugar Land Police Department, who said Animal Services recommends formal acceptance of the gifts. "The donations received throughout the year from residents, non residents, and businesses... the city has a policy that any monetary donations, be formally accepted by the city council," Rodriguez said, and listed the donors and amounts that make up the total.

Rodriguez told the council the seven larger donors include Ricky Boren ($1,000), Diana Schroeder ($2.50), Mark Abrams ($250), John McGee ($500), a Kendra Scott fundraiser ($660.62), an anonymous donor ($315) and Susan Kuzila ($500), which together totaled $3,475.62; the full set of donations reported totaled $5,438.12. Rodriguez said the funds are intended "to support the care and adoption efforts for the animal shelter residents and community wide animal welfare education initiatives."

Council Member Jennifer Lane moved to accept the donations; another council member seconded. The council voted 7–0 to accept the funds.

The council’s action formally places the donations in the city’s donation fund for the shelter. No additional restrictions or allocations beyond the cover-sheet description were specified during the item.

The donation acceptance was taken as a consent-item vote during the regular meeting; no further public comment on the donations was recorded.
