Board approves bond-funded construction contracts and change orders including sidewalks, kilns upgrades and track work

The St. Joseph School District Board of Education approved several bond-funded construction contracts and change orders at its Jan. 27 meeting.
Lawhon Construction was awarded a combined contract of $309,200 to install sidewalks where none exist at Pickett and Parkway elementary schools. The scope covers new sidewalks across the front of both campuses connecting to existing entrances; the work will be paid from 2024 bond funds. Board members asked about how the district—s sidewalk work ties to a slower-moving city sidewalk program; district staff said the district is proceeding on its property now but expects to coordinate future connections with city work when the city schedule allows.
The board also approved a change order from Lawhon for electrical upgrades required to install ceramic kilns as part of fine-arts bond upgrades at several sites. District staff said the change order is necessary to meet electrical-capacity requirements at some buildings.
On athletic facilities, trustees approved contracts and a contract adjustment for track and turf work. MidAmerican Golf (site prep) and ATG (turf and installation) updated prior approvals so that ATG will supply and install the turf while MidAmerican Golf—s contract was reduced accordingly; dirt-moving and mobilization work was underway in the days after the meeting.
Each motion was moved, seconded and approved by recorded voice votes. The motions passed unanimously where recorded.
The administration said the sidewalk work and other change orders come from the district—s 2024 bond program and that the district will coordinate site-level details (retaining walls on hilly Parkway site, property-line extents at Pickett) with contractors during construction.
