Kyrene board approves two capital contracts for Monte Vista and Paloma projects

The Kyrene Elementary School District governing board voted unanimously to award a mechanical contract for Monte Vista and to authorize use of a cooperative contract for renovations at Kyrene de Paloma Innovation Academy.
The board approved awarding IFBK251030, described on the agenda as the Monte Vista mechanical yard project, to Pueblo Mechanical; the board listed taxes, bonds and insurance as the sources of funds. The board also authorized use of a GPA cooperative contract number 2315 PV02 (awarded to the Chassis Building Team) to complete restroom renovations, weatherization and a playground renovation at Kyrene de Paloma; the listed funding sources are bonds and other district funds. Both motions passed 5 to 0.
The purchases were placed on the public agenda because each exceeds the district threshold of $1,000,000 set by the board for transparency. “If anything’s got a $1,000,000 disbursement request, we put that on the agenda for discussion,” President Kevin Walsh said when introducing the item.
Board members asked questions about accessibility and code compliance for the restroom renovations. Chris Herman, associate superintendent and chief financial officer, told the board that when a district remodels a space that is not currently to modern code, the work triggers bringing that area “up to current standards and codes.” He said, “Anytime you touch or remodel or renovate that space, then everything in that area has to be brought up to current standards and codes.”
Motions and votes: Member Bunny Davis moved and member Cedric Collins seconded the Monte Vista award; the motion passed 5 to 0. Member Collins moved and Vice President Trina Nelson seconded the Paloma cooperative-contract authorization; the motion passed 5 to 0.
District staff said the Monte Vista work is expected to take place in summer 2025. The agenda packet posted to BoardDocs contains the bidders list and other procurement documents, the board noted. No dollar amounts for the individual contracts were read into the public record during the meeting, and the agenda materials on BoardDocs contain additional procurement detail.
