District officials described deteriorating conditions on the high school tennis courts and recommended full reconstruction be considered in a future capital project while scheduling short-term repairs.
Athletic Director Dave Austin told the board the campus has eight courts (two sets of four). He said the East courts received full reconstruction in 2017 as part of a capital project and have aged toward a 10–15 year useful life; the district has repairs scheduled to address new cracks. The West courts underwent partial renovation in 2021 and fence replacement in 2022 after an original plan for full reconstruction was scaled back; Austin said partial fixes have accelerated recurring problems including surface cracks, pooling and uneven drainage.
Austin told the board the West courts already show areas that do not drain without manual clearing, and some cracking has begun to appear on courts of play, notably on what he identified as Court 3. He said Copeland (a vendor) is scheduled to begin crack repairs starting with the East courts and then work to the West courts, but he described those fixes as short-term "band-aids" that will likely need repeating and that a full reconstruction would address groundwater and pitch issues.
Board members noted a recent capital project passed by voters and asked why tennis courts were not included. Administrators said the courts had been discussed in prior planning cycles and that reconstruction is expensive; they also said the likely state building-aid eligibility for a reconstruction would depend on the courts’ useful life and other factors. Superintendent Dan Mayberry and facilities director Cliff Nooney said the district has placed the courts on an internal priority list and intends to include them as a priority in the next capital project planning process.
Officials described wide community use — high school varsity and JV teams, summer camps and adult leagues — and noted the girls varsity team was unbeaten at the time of the meeting. The board did not vote on reconstruction funding at the meeting; administration scheduled vendor repairs for immediate cracks and committed to including full reconstruction in future capital planning.
