Board approves limited use of metal-detection wands; staff to procure and train

The superintendentpresented the item after a student group asked the board in December to consider wands under narrow circumstances. The superintendent recommended the board approve deployment only in limited situations — for example when reasonable suspicion exists that a specific student or group poses a danger — and not for general, everyday screening.
If the board approved the recommendation, the district will begin procurement of wands, identify required staff training and conduct a controlled rollout. Staff said detailed procedures, including training, documentation and parental-notification practices, would be developed and brought to the board as needed.
