Hollywood Beach Elementary reports mixed spring test results, expands literacy and SEL supports

Monica Schellenberger, principal of Hollywood Beach Elementary School, reported to the Hueneme School District Board of Education on spring 2024 student assessment results and the school’s literacy and social-emotional supports.
Schellenberger said the school’s spring 2024 California Assessment of Student Performance (CASP) English language arts results showed 48.99 percent of students met or exceeded standards, a slight decline from 50.61 percent in spring 2023. She gave grade-level breakdowns on the slides presented to the board and noted ongoing targeting of current fifth-graders who were fourth-graders last year.
The principal said spring 2024 math (CAST) results showed 46.98 percent of students met or exceeded standards, compared with 46.06 percent the prior spring; staff described focused work on math last year and called out a reported growth figure when reviewing item-level data.
Schellenberger flagged student social-emotional learning (SEL) results from the Panorama survey, saying the school saw declines on measures tied to perseverance and self-efficacy. She said three Panorama questions produced particularly large point drops: question 2 (down 23 points), question 4 (down 13 points) and question 5 (down 10 points). To respond, staff plan classroom lessons led by the school counselor on perseverance and self-efficacy and the school runs small academic groups on Mondays for some 5th-grade students to support both test skills and confidence.
On literacy instruction, Schellenberger said the school is implementing the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) program for kindergarten through third grade and that teachers are using materials from the 95 Percent Group, including Morphe Magic, to target morphology (prefixes and suffixes) and vocabulary. She also reported teachers are using digital math tools such as Desmos as instructional supports.
Schellenberger thanked community partners and families, and described student council and PTA fundraising activities. She said a winter sale organized by student council raised $500 that was donated to the Camarillo Bridal Shelter and that PTA fundraisers helped lower costs for the sixth-grade trip for some students. She also acknowledged the school’s NTS team and other staff involved in programming and professional learning.
Schellenberger closed by offering thank-yous and distributing notes and invitations from several classrooms to board members.
