The library director told the board the library is recruiting for a part-time children's position and has a candidate being interviewed; the director said candidate has no library experience but brings more than 25 years working with children in other professional settings.
Staff and board discussed the city's transition to a new accounting and payroll system. The director said staff have received payroll training and that the accounting side remains to be finalized; December financials are pending while the city closes the books under the new software. The director compared the new payroll system to Paylocity, saying the new platform is more straightforward and should generate easier reporting once staff finish accounting training.
The director also reported that the city has joined CIVMIC, a Wisconsin municipal services and training organization, and that staff will benefit from expanded training opportunities at no additional cost. Board members asked whether prior insurance-carrier training had been provided; staff clarified some training history and said new civic training resources will be available to staff.
Board expansion: The director said Port Washington was reclassified as a third-class city, which under state law requires expanding the library board. The city will add two additional board seats; interested candidates should contact the mayor.
Staff in-service: The board was told the library will close from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13 for a staff training day that will include policy review and, if available, CPR training from the fire department on the new defibrillator.
Other operational notes included ongoing building cleanup to remove outdated shelving and toys (staff plan a nonprofit pickup day and then will contact Habitat for Humanity ReStore in West Bend for removal of unclaimed items). The director said staff will present furnishings and layout choices at the Feb. 19 architect open house.
