City manager updates: water-main break, audit progress, garbage pickups and parks facility study

City management provided operational updates at the Jan. 13 Danville City Commission meeting, reporting a major water-main break, progress on an outstanding audit, resolution steps for garbage-service delays and a multijurisdictional effort on regional water planning.
Water main: Staff said crews repaired a 12-inch break near Third and Main; the break was contained and sealed within a few hours. The city credited utility staff with rapid response and noted the repair highlighted the importance of redundant water infrastructure.
Audit status: The city’s annual audit is in technical review with the auditor; staff expects to receive the finalized audit this month and said audit-industry delays (labor shortages and backlogs) have affected many local governments.
Garbage pickup: The city reported Republic Services has returned to schedule after recent weather-related service interruptions. Residents asked to set missed bags near the cans (not on top) and to clear cans from snow banks so trucks can access them.
Parks facility study: Staff reported site visits to six indoor-recreation facilities (including Madisonville, Muhlenberg County, Bowling Green, Shelbyville, Versailles and Georgetown) to gather design and operational lessons for a proposed indoor facility with aquatics and multi-court space. Staff will present a consolidated report and recommendations to the commission following the review.
Regional water commission: The city manager said Danville and neighboring communities are moving toward creating a regional water commission to improve communication, redundancy and long-term supply planning. Staff reported that other jurisdictions, including Mount Vernon, are advancing resolutions in support and that the effort is continuing.
Staff also reminded commissioners of upcoming events: the Kentucky League of Cities newly elected officials academy (Jan. 15) and the MLK Day community celebration (Jan. 20).
