The Machesney Park Planning and Zoning Commission on Jan. 27 voted to forward Ordinance 0225, a text amendment setting the required bypass lane width for commercial drive‑thru lanes.
At the prior committee meeting, a 14‑foot bypass width had been recommended, but staff and an engineer raised concerns that 14 feet may be unnecessary. Commissioners said staff’s engineering review indicated a 12‑foot bypass at grade provides adequate clearance for typical vehicles while accounting for overhangs.
During the meeting commissioners discussed potential issues for longer commercial trucks and emergency vehicles passing under canopies or overhangs and noted the 12‑foot measure is in addition to the drive‑thru lane itself. After questions and brief discussion, commissioners agreed to move the amendment forward with the 12‑foot specification.
Roll call on the motion recorded yes votes from Commissioner Holmes, Commissioner Klinger, Commissioner Plueger and Commissioner Van Liven; Commissioner Hankins was recorded as not present. The commission’s vote forwards the ordinance with a positive recommendation to the next review step, the Planning and Economic Development Committee on Feb. 3, per the meeting record.
No final ordinance was enacted at the meeting; the item will return for further consideration by the village review process.
