PCAPS reports record animal intake; commission accepts $2,000 cat‑program donation

Peoria County Animal Protective Services (PCAPS) told members that 2024 saw more than 6,000 animal intakes, the highest intake the shelter has seen in about 12 years, and the commission approved a $2,000 donation to support the agency’s cat program.

"Over 6,000 animals came into the shelter," the PCAPS presenter said, adding that higher intake was driven in part by an increase in cruelty case confiscations as well as stray and owner‑surrendered animals. The presenter noted an internal promotion to an animal patrol officer and an active hiring effort to fill kennel technician positions.

Separately, the commission considered and approved a $2,000 donation from former volunteers Cindy and Joel Peterson to be used by PCAPS. The donor funds are intended for live traps and accessories, upgrades to cat enrichment equipment, and other cat supplies the shelter anticipates needing in 2025. The motion to put the resolution on the floor was made by Member Williams and seconded by Member Rosenbaum; the resolution was then voted on and carried.

During discussion the presenter said the donation came from former volunteers who moved out of town and that funds will be spent on live traps, enrichment items and other cat care supplies. No dissenting comments were recorded during the vote.

The PCAPS monthly report and the donation resolution were considered during the meeting’s informational and resolutions segments; the commission moved both items in sequence and voted to accept the donation and to continue filling staff vacancies.
