Homewood's committee on Jan. 27 approved a playground package for Salter Road Pocket Park, selecting Option 2 (traditional swing set and multi-use equipment) and accepting a grant to fund recycled-tire surfacing.
City staff presented two equipment packages from Great Southern Recreation. Option 1 centered on a ground-level "cloud 9" spinner and a celebration spinner (prices ~ $39,000); Option 2 was a more traditional equipment layout with swings (approximate equipment price $28,000). The surfacing is funded by a December grant and will use recycled tire material in a green-and-brown color scheme to match Central Park.
Councilors discussed accessibility, and staff said while the site is small and cannot accommodate a full adaptive swing like Central Park, seats with straps or a parent/baby seat could be installed on the chosen swing structure to improve access. Rusty (vendor contact) confirmed seats can be swapped to include a baby/parent seat.
Motion and vote: A motion to approve Option 2 (with surfacing supported by grant funds and at least one baby/parent swing seat) passed unanimously in committee (4-0) and will proceed to full council for contract execution.
Why it matters: The park playground has been in the capital plan for several years; neighbors have been awaiting installation. The grant-funded surface reduces the city's out-of-pocket cost and the chosen equipment emphasizes broader use and family accessibility.
