Assemblymember Raugh read the resolution (Assembly No. 13) and Assemblymember Riley spoke in support, saying thanking officers "is not only saying it to them, we are thanking their families for everything they miss and all the sacrifice." Several members, including Assemblymembers Guldolfo, Ofero and Ramos, spoke about personal experience in law enforcement and recounted recent incidents. Assemblymember Guldolfo noted Suffolk County police officer Bradley Gallagher’s release from the hospital after a critical crash; Assemblymember Durso highlighted the growing concern about officer mental health and noted a recent officer suicide in Nassau County.
Speakers urged sustained recognition and support for officers and their families. Assemblymember Riley closed by recording an affirmative vote in favor and the chair announced the resolution adopted by voice vote.
The resolution asks the governor to issue a proclamation recognizing the date; the floor debate emphasized symbolic recognition, recruitment concerns for police agencies and the need for mental-health supports for first responders.
