Commissioners approve $1,000 for Matthews Committee on Education events

The Town of Matthews Board of Commissioners on Jan. 27 authorized the town manager to bring forward a budget amendment of $1,000 to support two events organized by the Matthews Committee on Education.
Joanna Scamizzi, chair of the Matthews Committee on Education, described two planned 90-minute community events: one on digital citizenship aimed at parents and families, and a second, smaller drop-in event during May (Mental Health Awareness Month) focused on children's mental-health resources. "Our goal is to host a 90 minute event that would bring families and students into the town hall and provide some experts... and let them leave with certain tools," Scamizzi told commissioners.
Scamizzi said the committee plans to invite a mix of public, charter, private and homeschool education providers and to align the digital-citizenship event with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction standards. The committee requested modest funds to help attract attendance, including gift cards and a small post-event activity; the committee initially asked for $900, and Commissioner Ken McCool proposed raising that to $1,000 to cover incidentals.

Commissioner Ken McCool moved to authorize the town manager to prepare a budget amendment in the amount of $1,000 for the committee’s two events. The motion passed unanimously.

Becky Hawk, the town manager, said staff could absorb the $1,000 within existing budget lines and would bring a formal budget amendment to a future meeting for adoption. Commissioners suggested outreach options, including the Peachjar school-notification system used by Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, and encouraged committee members to continue coordination with CMS and other education providers.
