Students and teachers highlight fundraising, robotics and creative-writing events at Brighton Area Schools meeting

High-school student leaders presented recent fundraising and leadership activities to the Brighton Area Schools Board of Education, and community members used the public-comment period to highlight a robotics season and a middle-school creative-writing event.
Charlotte Anzick and Ashlyn Bergens, members of the high school leadership team, told the board their leadership class recently presented an $85,000 donation check to Trinity Cancer Center in Grapevine. "We raised a total of $85,000," Ashlyn said. The students said Brighton Area Schools has donated more than $425,000 to the center since 2012. Recent activities included an Operation Christmas fundraiser that raised $18,500 and, in partnership with Yoga Strong Foundation, provided more than 400 presents to local early-learning centers.
Student activities and competitions The pair reported DECA’s district competition produced 51 state qualifiers and 112 medals, with 106 students competing, and that 37 students qualified for state-level HOSA events. They also said the leadership class staged an annual holiday assembly and continued tutoring and community service efforts.
Robotics and creative-writing public comments Missy Sag, a teacher and robotics coach, spoke about the StrandLinX robotics program. Sag said the program fielded three teams with 36 students and 19 volunteer mentors; teams worked on engineering, programming, and business subteams and competed in two events where they finished in the middle of the field.
Jean Marie Malefo, a Scranton Middle School teacher, described a student-led creative-writing “coffee house” event that involved committee work, decorating, fundraising, and student readings; she said every student who attended read before a large crowd and that students plan to connect the event to future acts of service.
Board response Board members thanked students, teachers and volunteers for the programs and suggested groups interested in longer presentations coordinate with staff so the board can schedule fuller recognition at a future meeting.
No formal board action was taken on these presentations; they were part of the public-comment and student-report portions of the agenda.
