Barbara Lopez, Del Norte County treasurer-tax collector, presented the county’s quarterly investment report for the period ending Dec. 31, 2024, reporting a portfolio of $150,471,023 and interest earnings of about $1.3 million for the quarter and $5.3 million for calendar year 2024.
Lopez told the board she holds approximately 46% of the portfolio in agency securities, about 12% in certificates of deposit and about 34% in the County’s liquid CAMP account — roughly $51 million. She said many existing investments are maturing at low rates and the treasurer plans to reinvest maturing amounts into higher-yield options, including U.S. Treasuries, noting that treasury yields were outperforming CDs at the time of the presentation.
Lopez said about $30 million of the portfolio is due to mature in the next two years at rates under 2%, and those funds present an opportunity to reinvest at rates in the roughly 4–4.5% range. She identified LAIF at approximately 4.4% and CAMP at about 4.7% as of mid-January 2025 and said she would monitor the markets to move assets to higher yields when appropriate.
Board members praised the results. One called the $5.3 million in 2024 interest “pretty impressive,” and Lopez said the county’s cash position left her comfortable keeping some funds liquid to meet near-term obligations, including ERF disbursements.
Why this matters: Higher interest earnings boost county revenues available for services without raising taxes, and the treasurer’s reinvestment plan will influence near-term fund performance and liquidity.
Lopez said she will keep the board informed as maturities occur and as market conditions change.
