Commission approves landscaper’s recommendation to replace terminal Italian cypress

The commission authorized airport staff to remove two Italian cypress trees at the Kingman Municipal Airport terminal and proceed with replacements recommended by the city’s landscaper, as long as the plants meet parameters set by the commission.
Staff reported that the two Italian cypress in the terminal’s forecourt are infested with spider mites and that prior inspections and an ADOT study (2016) had recommended removal because the tall, narrow trees can become roosting habitat for birds. Staff said that one tree already shows irreversible damage and that removing only one would leave an asymmetrical appearance.
Commission discussion focused on selecting replacement species that are drought tolerant, non–fruit bearing, have small root systems and limited canopy to avoid roof damage and reduce wildlife attraction. Several commissioners suggested native or desert-tolerant options (cactus, small bushes) and emphasized minimizing bird habitat near the terminal because FAA wildlife guidance discourages creating wildlife attractants near airfields.
Staff said they will meet with the airport’s landscaper (Kimon Landscaping) and asked for latitude to proceed with the landscaper’s recommendation if it meets the commission’s parameters. A commissioner moved to accept whatever the landscaper recommends provided it fits the stated parameters (drought tolerant, non-fruit bearing, small canopy, small root system); the motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
Staff said the landscaper maintains the front of Mohave Airport Drive and visits the site about once a week; staff will report back with the proposed replacement species and schedule. Staff also said trees would be removed promptly and the planting plan implemented consistent with the commission’s direction.
