District 300 previews summer programs including ESY, credit recovery, Summer Scholars and camps

Superintendent’s staff presented a high-level preview of District 300’s summer offerings: extended-school-year services, credit recovery and enhancement, driver education, Summer Scholars, districtwide Summer Read 300 and themed camps.
District 300 staff on Jan. 21 provided a high-level preview of the district’s planned summer programming, describing services designed for students with individualized education plans, credit-recovery and acceleration options, literacy programming and a range of enrichment camps.
Dr. Gravel and Mrs. Woodbury (presentation team) told the board the district will offer extended-school-year (ESY) services and Northwestern Illinois Association programs for students eligible under individualized education plans. The district also plans credit-recovery opportunities for middle and high school students and credit-enhancement courses for high schoolers who want to accelerate coursework.
For high school students, the district will offer driver education that includes both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel components to meet state requirements. Academic-extension programming will include a Summer Scholars program for students rising to grades 1–8. The district also plans Summer Read 300 — open to all current students from pre-K through grade 12 for a second year — intended to encourage reading with prizes and celebration.
A suite of summer camps will be offered for athletics, career and technical education (CTE) exposure and fine arts. District staff said registration details and a full program schedule will be released later and that the board will receive a more in-depth briefing on summer programming in March.
The presentation emphasized the district’s intent to meet diverse student needs through multiple pathways: special-education continuity over the summer, recovery of lost credits, academic acceleration, literacy engagement and enrichment opportunities in athletics and the arts. Staff did not provide enrollment caps, specific dates or program budgets during the high-level preview; they said additional details will be forthcoming.
