Youth commission narrows YMCA sites, launches youth survey and plans annual report to county commissioners

Members of the St. Mary's County Youth Advisory Commission discussed progress on the YMCA Exploratory Committee, agreed to push a youth survey, and began drafting an annual report to present to county commissioners.
Chair Donovan Weekly and staff liaison Kelsey Bush reported that the YMCA Exploratory Committee has identified three possible locations for a county YMCA: an empty lot adjacent to the Lexington Park Library, the area surrounding the Great Mills swimming pool, and a parcel north of Nicollet Park. The committee plans two remaining public meetings, on Feb. 20 and March 19, and staff encouraged youth to use a short survey to help prioritize features for the facility.
"If you believe that you or your family would be prospective users and you have some ideas or some experience with what is a need that is currently unmet in this county, please" use the survey, Donovan said. The commission circulated a short link to the survey during the meeting and will resend it by email.
Commissioners discussed what to include in a written report to the county commissioners, including a look back at topics the Youth Advisory Commission addressed in its first year, proposed priorities for 2020 (education, mental health, youth facilities), and suggested formats for presentation. Staff recommended compiling members' notes and producing a consolidated draft for the next meeting; the commission set March 2 as its next meeting date.
The group also discussed awards to recognize outstanding youth or adults who support youth programs. Joshua Guy suggested modeling an award on the county's Commission for Women program; staff noted the Commission for People with Disabilities also issues recognitions at commissioner meetings and offered to provide contact information for existing award programs and processes.
Commissioners raised program requests and outreach topics for upcoming meetings. Taylor Berry asked whether the county health department could present on mental-health first-aid training; a staff member offered to contact the health department. County staff also suggested inviting a census office representative in March to explain why a complete count matters to school funding and youth services.
Ending: The commission set follow-up steps: promote the YMCA survey to peers, forward ideas for the annual report to the staff liaison for collation, and pursue invitations to the health department and census representatives for future meetings.
