Pelham board approves minutes, a personnel transfer and hears construction and safety updates

At its Jan. 27 meeting, the Pelham City Schools Board of Education approved prior meeting minutes and financial statements, approved a voluntary personnel transfer within the Child Nutrition Program, and received construction and safety updates from the superintendent’s office.
The board voted to approve the Dec. 30 and Dec. 19 special-called meeting minutes and the financial statements; a motion to approve passed by voice vote with all members saying “aye.” The board later approved a voluntary transfer into a CNP assistant management position for an elementary school; the meeting records a motion and a “Roger Toper” cue on the motion line and a subsequent voice vote with “aye.”
Superintendent’s construction update (presented by Mr. Collins) detailed active projects and near-term milestones: footings for the band-room addition have been poured and steel frames were scheduled to arrive on site later in the week; interior work on the existing band room was scheduled to begin Monday, March 3, and the next OAC (Owner/Architect/Contractor) meeting for that project was scheduled for Monday, March 10 at 1 p.m. The electrical and plumbing contractors completed utility connections for the outdoor culinary kitchen; equipment installation was ready to proceed and a custom cover had been ordered. A pre-construction meeting for a reroofing project was scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 6 at 9 a.m.; drawings for a new concession stand and restroom project at the football stadium were expected to be completed by Wednesday, March 19.
The board discussed capital-project sequencing for Bella Ridge Elementary: the superintendent asked to move a planned replacement of engineered-fiber playground surfacing (originally listed for the 2025–26 capital plan) into fiscal year 2024–25. The superintendent said funds for the new concession stand would not be dispersed until the later school year, which would allow the playground surface project to be advanced in the current fiscal year; the superintendent said a project estimate was attached and a formal quote would be provided when available.
On safety, the district reported it was recognized as the top district in Alabama for the average number of safety entries by school resource officers and administrators using a pilot safety-app the State passed through funds to allow districts to trial. The district also publicly thanked bus drivers for ensuring student transport during recent freezing temperatures.
The board scheduled its next regular meeting for Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. and adjourned by voice vote.
