Pelham City Schools honors teachers, support staff and student achievements

Pelham City Schools on Jan. 27 recognized teachers, support staff and students across the district for academic, artistic and athletic achievements.
District leaders presented support-person and teacher-of-the-year awards to staff at Pelham Oaks Elementary, Pelham Ridge Elementary, Pelham Park Middle School and Pelham High School, and named districtwide elementary and secondary teachers of the year. Honorees included Maria Guzman (Pelham Oaks), Tiffany Grimes (Pelham Ridge), Anita Britt (Pelham Park Middle School), Debbie Adams and Lisa Detwiler (Pelham High School, tied), Jordan Salter (Pelham Ridge, elementary teacher of the year), Jackson Vaughn (Pelham Oaks, elementary teacher of the year and district elementary teacher of the year), Trey Clark (Pelham Park Middle School) and Katie Travis (Pelham High School, district secondary teacher of the year).
The board also recognized additional individual accomplishments: Aubrey Papanastos (national board certification), multiple Pelham High School band and orchestra students who earned All-State placements, and theater students who placed at the state Thespian festival. In athletics, the Pelham High varsity volleyball team finished the season as 6A state runner-up and several players earned All-State honors. Senior Edwin Hernandez of Pelham High School was announced as a QuestBridge Scholarship Match recipient to Stanford University.
Superintendent and district presenters framed the recognitions as examples of the district’s broader emphasis on student opportunity and staff excellence. School principals gave brief recaps of programs tied to arts, community engagement and career-technical education that supported the honored students and staff.
The board paused business to allow honorees and their families to be acknowledged in person; attendees were invited to remain for the remainder of the meeting or depart after recognitions.
