GREELEY — The board honored Sydney Sarris, a mathematics instructor at Early College Academy, after the White House named her a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Dr. Christina Pilch introduced Sarris and noted that Sarris had been a Colorado finalist for the award in 2023 and on Jan. 13, 2025 was announced as a national honoree. The district said 106 educators nationwide receive the award each year, and honorees receive a certificate signed by the president, professional-development events in Washington, D.C., and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.
Sarris addressed the board and thanked district leadership for the support and resources that she said helped her apply and succeed: “The recognition really shows that we're doing the right work here in District 6. The curriculum we chose, the professional developments that we are giving our teachers, I took all of it and just ran with it and it got recognized at the national level.”
Superintendent Pilch and board members praised Sarris for choosing to teach in District 6 despite a national shortage of STEM teachers, and thanked her former and current principals for their support.
Ending: The board presented the honorific recognition during its meeting and celebrated Sarris’s national award and upcoming recognition events in Washington, D.C.
