Council approves $146,000 CPA appropriation to keep Car Park Phase 2 on track

Medford’s City Council unanimously approved an expedited Community Preservation Act appropriation of $146,000 on Jan. 7 to support phase two of the Car Park renovation project.
Planner Amanda Centrella and CPA manager presented the request and said the funds will pay for early consultant and engineering work needed to meet grant deadlines (including the Land and Water Conservation Fund) and to manage long lead times for specialty materials such as solar panels and shade structures. Phase 2 features a mini skatepark, playground, splash pad, a shaded basketball court with solar panels, an adult fitness area and a dog park.
The appropriation follows a unanimous recommendation from the Community Preservation Committee and multiple funding sources already committed to the project, including a $1.0 million Land and Water Conservation Fund award, a Department of Energy federal earmark and ARPA funds, the planner said. Councilors praised years of community input and staff effort and supported the appropriation so the project can move to subconsultant procurement and detailed engineering.
Outcome: The motion to approve the $146,000 appropriation passed unanimously. Councilors said the project shows multiagency funding and years of community planning; staff will report procurement progress as the project moves forward.
