Donors fund new digital marquee, students and cheerleaders honored at Nutley board meeting

The Nutley Board of Education recognized multiple donations and student achievements at the start of its meeting, including a $35,000 gift from alumnus Ken Chang to fund a new digital marquee at Nutley High School.
Director of facilities and school officials described the plan for a digital marquee on Franklin Avenue that will display school announcements, athletic results and student recognitions. Mr. Williams told the board the donation will support installation of a new digital sign and thanked Chang for his contribution: “We are deeply, grateful for your generous contribution for the installation of a new digital marquee and sign that will be placed hopefully soon out there on Franklin Avenue,” he said.
John H. Walker Middle School’s PTO, with support from the Nutley Educational Foundation and parent volunteers, also raised funds for a new sign at that building; the board accepted those donations during the meeting.
The board presented awards from the VFW Patriot’s Pen essay contest to student winners in the sixth through eighth grade category. The VFW and its auxiliary read winners’ names and presented certificates and cash awards to first‑ and second‑place recipients; the VFW post commander highlighted strong community veteran support and student participation.
Nutley High’s award‑winning cheerleading squad also received the 2024 Second American Division championship plaque. Coach Pryor and coach Farago joined students onstage for the recognition.
Board members thanked volunteers, PTO leaders and donors and noted student achievements across athletics, music and theater during the superintendent’s report. No board action beyond accepting donations and recognizing award winners was taken at this portion of the meeting.
