Debbie Zukowski of 202 Hillsdale, speaking as a member and chairperson of the Rossford Eagles Auxiliary, invited the public and council to the auxiliary's youth oratory contest on Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Rossford Eagles, 658 Lime City Road. "Our competition this year...will have about 6 or 7 students participating," Zukowski said, describing the program for 10- to 15-year-olds and recounting past local participants who advanced to the zone competition. She asked council and staff to help promote the event and said she had coordinated with Shelly Burch at the high school.
Dr. Martin Perez of 553 Maybar Drive told council he is an immigrant from Mexico raised and educated in the United States and urged council to consider "how the Rossford community will treat its immigrants" amid national debates over deportations and proposals affecting birthright citizenship. "People are afraid," Dr. Perez said, and he asked the council to think about how fear among community members affects municipal governance and unity.
Council did not take action on either public comment; the remarks were entered into the meeting record during the audience-remarks segment.
