Evergreen playground refresh moves toward February board vote after community meetings

Perkiomen Valley School District presented proposed designs, cost options and community outreach steps for a planned playground refresh at Evergreen Elementary during the Jan. 29 Safety and Operations Committee meeting.
Mr. Marsh, the staff member leading the project, said the district held multiple evening meetings for families and will present to fourth- and fifth-graders to gather input. Home & School told the presenter it has at least $15,000 pledged to the project and said it could absorb a modest gap if the committee selects higher-cost options.
The presenter showed three main playground footprint options (smaller, medium, larger) and two kindergarten-specific options. He said one option that has proved controversial with some families and staff is removal of the Gaga pit; the presenter recommended removing it from the immediate refresh package because of management concerns but said the district could revisit Gaga as a separate project later.
"Home and School is offering at least $15,000...if we were to combine the two package options that are the most expensive, it might bring us in about $5,000 over with that $15,000," Mr. Marsh said. "The maximum cost to the school district would be 169,085 under those options...The installation would happen as quickly as possible — summer of 2025 if we push this back any further."
Committee members asked about ADA access, capacity differences among the options, color choices and supervision sightlines. Mr. Marsh said he will gather specification details (capacity numbers and accessibility features) from the vendor and follow up with staff and the Home & School group before finalizing a February board request.
