The Madison Historic Board of Review on Jan. 27 approved a certificate of appropriateness for exterior alterations and a roughly 1,100‑square‑foot addition at 224 East Second Street, commonly identified in the application as the Circle K property, for the NOVA Group Inc.
Applicant Jacob Moss described the work as “a significant interior remodel with a building addition to the left hand side. The building addition is, roughly 1,100 square feet. It's a walk in freezer, for the kitchen equipment that they're planning on putting in,” and said the project retains brick, corbeling at the parapet and other character‑defining elements on the existing facade.
Board staff and members reviewed commercial design guidance and found the proposed addition compatible in proportion and materials; a staff review noted that locating additions on secondary elevations is preferred and that the addition is substantially smaller than the existing building. Board member Ken McWilliams led the findings discussion and concluded the proposal “meets the guidelines.”
During the presentation the applicant said the front door will be relocated to the storefront area and that storefront infill will use clear anodized aluminum and clear glass to match existing openings; no exterior regrading was planned. The board recorded no conditions beyond standard permitting and a certificate will be mailed to the applicant. The motion to approve carried on a roll‑call vote.
