Lynn senior center expands programs: LinTec salon, tech grant, JEDI navigators and LCTV partnership

Megan, senior center staff, reported that the center served 1,124 seniors in December and is seeing steady membership growth. "We're averaging 2 new seniors a month," Megan said, and added that Mondays and special events draw the highest attendance.
Megan outlined program partnerships now active at the center. She described a monthly beauty/salon service provided by LinTec (seniors pay LinTec directly) and read the service price list during the meeting: "A haircut, $7... blow dry, $8... nails, plain manicure for $7," remarks that she used to illustrate affordability of the new service. The salon visits are scheduled once a month on the third Thursday.
Megan said the center is wrapping up a $100,000 technology grant from the Commonwealth and expects to install a tech lab upstairs while establishing a low-vision tech lab on the first floor. The center is also using the JEDI navigators program for one-on-one technology help "Monday-Friday" to assist seniors with phones, iPads and computers, and to help eligible participants obtain devices based on income.
On medical and support programming, staff listed upcoming on-site services: a Brigham Care medical van visit, public-health presentations, a MassHealth representative visit, a dentist visit, and monthly blood-pressure/weight screenings that public health has been asked to schedule. "Transportation is highly utilized... For the month of December, our driver picked up 230 seniors and brought them to the center," Megan told the board.
Megan also said the center will partner with Lynn TV to record and preserve seniors' oral histories and local recollections, with an anticipated start next month after staff complete required training with the station.
Board members praised staff for program growth and for linking seniors with intergenerational services. Lisa Tobin said she appreciated LinTec's intergenerational work with students and noted the center's programming quality rising under current staff.
The meeting adjourned after a motion to adjourn was made and seconded later in the session.
