Laura, a city staff member overseeing the project, told the Lynn Council on Aging board that contractors are finishing phase 1 of the senior center renovation and that the city expects to receive the contractor's certificate of occupancy by the end of the week.
The update matters because the certificate will allow staff to move kitchen equipment back into the renovated first floor and begin daily operations there, Laura said. She added the contractor would clean the kitchen over the coming weekend "that way the equipment can be moved back in, and then you can start to use the kitchen as a proper kitchen."
Laura said the board will wait until change orders and credit reconciliations from phase 1 are finalized before deciding the scope and budget for the next phase. "For the next phase, we're going to see where we end up with our bills with all the change orders and credits from the first phase. We'll understand then how much money we have for the next phase of renovation work," she said. The project team plans to reassemble the building committee with the mayor's office to review designs and contractors for second-floor and stairwell-area work.
Board members and staff described the timeline as roughly on target after schedule shifts earlier in the project. "We were thinking around Christmas... then they thought that they could do better than that, moving it back to around Thanksgiving. And then we slid back kind of to where we were originally," Laura said, adding that the project had ended up "pretty much on target."
The board did not set a budget or vote on the next phase during the meeting; Laura said staff and the mayor's office will return with updated cost estimates once change-order accounting is complete. She asked board members to expect outreach about reconstituting the building committee and upcoming design reviews.
Board members thanked staff for managing construction while the senior center continued to host programs and residents. "I'm looking forward to the next phase and giving you more space that you can spread out into and enjoy," one board member said.
The meeting later adjourned after a recorded motion to adjourn.
