Hickory proclaims Oct. 5–11, 2025 Fire Prevention Week; city urges safe use and recycling of lithium‑ion batteries

Mayor Giss presented the proclamation to members of the Hickory Fire Department, which cited a National Fire Protection Association finding of increased battery‑related fires and warned that lithium‑ion batteries used in many household devices can overheat, start fires or explode if misused, damaged or improperly charged.
The proclamation named common devices that use lithium‑ion batteries — smartphones, tablets, laptops, power tools, e‑bikes, e‑scooters and toys — and urged households to keep working smoke alarms and to practice fire safety. The council commended the fire department for community outreach and recent promotions within the department.
